What Is a Mini Split?
The mini split is a ductless type of air conditioner. Once a mininsplit is installed, you’ll be able to control the temperature in various rooms, also known as “zone control.” Mini splits can also handle heating in addition to cooling.
On top of the mini split’s unique features, they also tend to be more efficient than the alternatives. In fact, mini splits are two to four times more efficient than the boiler, furnace, and baseboard.
How Does a Mini Split Work
The mini split air conditioner still shares the fundamentals of a traditional air conditioner. The cooling mode will move the hot air inside the home to the outside. The difference lies in where the cold air blows from.
A mini split system can disperse cold air from six different air handlers. Mini splits also go through other stages like compression, expression, and evaporation.
Benefits of Ductless Mini Splits
- Improved Efficiency. Traditional air conditioning systems rely on air ducts to deliver their air. In that process, up to 30% of that air can be lost. With a mini split installation, you’ll never have to worry about that. Thus, your air conditioning unit will have an improved efficiency you’ll love.
- Cost-Effectiveness. When you choose to install a mini split unit, the initial cost will be heftier compared to the installation cost of a normal air conditioner. But in the long run, choosing a mini split system is going to save you money. Mini split systems negate the need to buy an additional furnace or baseboards. This makes the mini split option much more cost-effective than other AC solutions.
- Less Maintenance. If you don’t like frequent maintenance, then a mini split is for you. The air filters of mini splits are easy to clean and only need to be replaced once a year. Plus, you don’t have to worry about cleaning and maintaining ductwork.
- Reheat Dehumidification Mode. A hot home is one thing. A humid home is another. Mini splits have a game-changing mode called the “Reheat Dehumidification Mode.” This mode allows you to control the humidity of your home without messing with the temperature settings.
Mini Splits vs. Central Air
It is worth noting that mini splits and central air conditioning units have their own set of positives and negatives. Here is how mini splits and central air conditioning units stack up against each other:
Mini Splits
- Better temperature control over individual rooms and spaces
- Higher efficiency
- Less energy loss
- Heats home up with better at a much more efficient rate
- Allows you to dehumidify your home without sacrificing temperature
- Cleaner air
Central Air
- Lower upfront costs
- Less required electrical work
- Much less of an obstruction in terms of aesthetics
Each of these AC units shares positives and negatives, but the mini split will give your household the most bang for its buck.
